Undergraduate Research Opportunties: REFUNDU
Mentor Expectations for the REFUNDU Program
The North Dakota INBRE supports and assists with a number of summer undergraduate research programs for UND students interested in the biomedical sciences. These programs are listed under current opportunities for undergraduate research at UND at the following web address http://ndinbre.org/opportunities/. One of the goals of the ND INBRE is to provide undergraduate students strong mentors and laboratories to support their efforts in undergraduate research. The minimal qualifications to be an INBRE mentor for undergraduate research in the 10 week summer undergraduate research program are as follows:
- The faculty member must be on-site in the laboratory for a minimum of 8 weeks of the 10 week summer program. Preference is given to faculty mentors that can be on-site for 9 of the 10 weeks. It is not acceptable to substitute a postdoctoral fellow, graduate student or technician for faculty participation.
- The laboratory must show evidence of scholarly productivity.
- The laboratory must indicate it has supply resources to support an undergraduate research effort. All students are required to present a poster at a symposium at the conclusion of the program.
- Preference is given to faculty members with a past history of undergraduate training and/or evidence of having a mature research program. New faculty in the early stages of developing their research programs or other faculty trying to re-establish research programs are given less priority for selection as mentors.
- All mentors should be aware that the students evaluate their experience with the program at the end of summer. This evaluation includes student satisfaction with their mentors. The evaluation mechanism is available for examination if a potential mentor so desires.
