Bioinformatics

Expertise includes data mining, statistical modeling, and artificial intelligence with strong background in personalize medicine and cancer genomics especially in biomarker discovery and toxicity testing. My experience in the life science and healthcare fields has taught me different aspects to combined large multi-omicsdatasets and develop analytics methods, for instance, genetic profiles of large populations of cancer patients, combined with epigenetics and health records, lifestyle information and development of predictive models for patient response to a certain treatment. Such studies provide important clues about the molecular events at the genome level as well as the level of molecular networks, uncovering new approaches to the search for targeted drugs against a host of diseases. I am providing support to analyze high throughput data such as, ChlPSeq, RNASeq, ExomeSeq, microarray, peak calling, etc.   More Info
Medical Informatics

Dr. Smith is currently an Assistant Professor of pathology at the UNDSMHS and Director of Medical Informatics for the ND INBRE.  Prior to joining the faculty, he served for 12 years as the Director of Science and Applied Informatics for the Great Plains Tribal Chairmen’s Health Board (GPTCHB) where he provided scientific leadership and technical assistance on initiatives aimed at developing and expanding the research and public health capacity of tribal communities throughout the Great Plains region. His teaching and research interests are oriented toward finding effective, low-cost solutions using informatics strategies that address disparities in the health of medically underserved populations. A major thrust of this work is concerned with the development of culturally-congruent, technology-enhanced public health interventions in partnership with tribal communities with a focus on improving disparities in oncology and behavioral health.  Dr. Smith earned the Master of Health Sciences and PhD degrees in psychiatric epidemiology from the Bloomberg Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. He went on to become a National Library of Medicine postdoctoral fellow in health sciences informatics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.  Dr. Smith brings over 15 years of experience as an epidemiologist and health informatics professional working with tribal communities, state departments of health, academic health centers, and industry to address the many complex challenges associated with the prevention, treatment, and management of chronic disease in rural communities. Information resources serves the UND SMHS by supplying state-of-the-art information technologies, contemporary information management methods, committed capable support personnel and support for new innovative initiatives by the faculty.  Located within the structure of information resources is Medical Media.  Medical Media supports the graphic and photographic needs for education, marketing and research within the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, the University Community and the Greater Grand Forks Community.  The ND INBRE helps support information resources at the UND SMHS in order to provide assistance to all partners of the ND INBRE that do not have equivalent technologies on their campuses.
