Summer 2009 undergraduate research
Applications are available for summer 2009 undergraduate research programs at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Short-Term Educational Experiences for Research (STEER) is funded by the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences of the National Institutes of Health. Its goal is to attract talented science undergraduates to graduate research careers in the environmental health sciences. The program provides a 10-week summer research lab experience. Research Experiences for UND Undergraduates (REFUNDU) enhances the INBRE initiative to attract talented basic and behavioral science undergraduates to professional careers in the health sciences. REFUNDU provides a 10-week summer research experience under the direction of selected faculty members at the medical school. Minot State student selected for honor
An abstract entitled "Application of the Accelerated Leuckart Reaction to Substituted Benzaldehydes" submitted by Minot State University student Steven Lewis has been selected for the Council On Undergraduate Research (CUR) 2009 Posters on the Hill presentation May 5 in Washington, D.C. Lewis works in the lab of Mikhail Bobylev, Ph.D., an INBRE-funded researcher at Minot State. About 60 undergraduate students were selected from the entire country to present their research to members of Congress. The students and their faculty advisors will spend a day at the Capitol, first meeting with their state representatives and senators, and then presenting their research during the poster session. The goal of the event is to advance the cause of undergraduate research.

INBRE collaboration noted in article
A collaborative effort between North Dakota INBRE, Cankdeska Cikana Community College and the UND medical school's Center for Rural Health was included in an article in the Winter 2009 issue of North Dakota Medicine magazine. "First Aid for the Mind" highlights the suicide prevention efforts of Jacque Gray, Ph.D., assistant professor with the Center for Rural Health. Gray and Leander "Russ" McDonald, vice president of academic affairs at Cankdeska Cikana, teach students on the Spirit Lake Reservation about basic research, which ties in with the tribal suicide prevention program.

DSU:Reaching across the state
What began six years ago at Dickinson State University as a makeshift lab in a converted storage closet equipped with instruments purchased on eBay has become a student career path to opportunities in medicine and biomedical research. The BRIN and INBRE grants from the National Institutes of Health awarded to and administered by the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences in 2001 and 2004 enabled DSU to equip a high-tech lab in which students can participate in biomedical research, opening the door to graduate and medical schools. Research at DSU is featured in the latest issue of North Dakota Medicine magazine.

Undergraduate research at UND
Undergraduate students at the University of North Dakota who participated in the REFUNDU (Research Experience for UND Undergraduates) program were among those featured in the fall issue of North Dakota Medicine magazine. Funded by the Dean’s Office of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, REFUNDU's goal is to enhance the North Dakota INBRE initiative to attract talented basic and behavioral science undergraduates to professional careers in the health sciences. This past summer, more than 40 undergraduates participated in research projects at UND's medical school. Studies included those focused on more effective drugs to treat epilepsy, potential breakthroughs in preventing Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases, the health effects of heavy metals in the environment, and the use of biomarkers to diagnose different types of cancer.
