Outreach Core Goals

The Outreach Core networks North Dakota’s five tribal colleges and the North Dakota Association of Tribal Colleges - the lead tribal college institution - to the state’s INBRE. The focus is on curriculum enhancement in the sciences, with the specific goals being:

  • Increasing the quality and level of science curricula at each of the tribal colleges.

  • Increasing the number of students enrolled in science courses at each college.

  • Increasing the numbers of tribal college students matriculating into science majors at the state’s baccalaureate institutions.

  • Increasing tribal college student awareness of opportunities in biomedical research careers through shared seminars, laboratory research experiences, and short course opportunities with the other INBRE network institutions.

  • Increasing the numbers of tribal college students entering into graduate programs aimed at careers in biomedical research.

The Outreach Core builds on the foundation established by the North Dakota BRIN, through its continued development and enhancement of distance delivery of shared science curricula.

Outreach Core Institutions

  • North Dakota Association of Tribal Colleges (NDATC): The NDATC works to promote the collective interests of its member institutions, particularly by providing mechanisms for students and faculty to participate in distance education opportunities. NDATC membership includes the five North Dakota tribal colleges, all of whom are accredited by the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges and all of whom are likewise part of the INBRE network.

  • Cankdeska Cikana Community College: A two-year tribal college, primarily serving the Spirit Lake Sioux Nation in northeastern North Dakota. CCCC has used the ND-BRIN Graduate Teaching Internship program to help expand its science faculty. Fulltime student enrollment: 178.
  • Fort Berthold Community College: A two-year tribal college, primarily serving the Three Affiliated Tribes (Nueta, Hidatsa, and Sahnish) on the Fort Berthold Reservation in west-central North Dakota. Because the reservation is physically divided by Lake Sakakawea, the College has taken a leadership role in providing distance education opportunities to satellite campuses within the reservation, itself. Fulltime student enrollment: 278.
  • Sitting Bull College: A two-year tribal college, primarily serving the Standing Rock Sioux Nation in south-central North Dakota. Sitting Bull College is in the process of building a new campus. It is also in the process of developing a four-year curriculum in the sciences. Fulltime student enrollment: 292.
  • Turtle Mountain Community College: Situated in north-central North Dakota near the Canadian border, this College primarily serves the Turtle Mountain Chippewa Reservation. The College now offers a 4-year curriculum in Education, as well as 2-year curricula in other disciplines. Fulltime student enrollment: 792.
  • United Tribes Technical College: A residential institution based in Bismarck, ND, and serving the needs of over 40 tribal nations across the U.S. It is developing an enhanced science curriculum, benefiting the college’s pre-nursing program and newly-launched program in injury prevention. Fulltime student enrollment : 644.
